Accurately Measure your Business Mileage...
If you use your own car, van, motorbike, or bike for work you can claim tax relief at the approved mileage rate:
Vehicle Type | First 10,000 business miles in the tax year | Each business mile over 10,000 in the tax year |
Cars and Vans | 45p | 25p |
Motorcycles | 24p | 24p |
Bicycles | 20p | 20p |
HMRC request that you record the dates and mileage of all your work journeys. However, attempting to keep track, or calculate the mileage you have chalked up throughout the year can be a difficult task. Forgetting to log work journeys can lead to a reduced mileage figure and therefore a lower tax relief claim.
That’s why we would suggest the use of the App MileIQ. The App is an automatic mileage tracker, that works in the background of your phone to log all your business travel for you. At the end of any journey, or at a later date, you can simply swipe left or right to declare whether the travel wasbusiness or personal.
There is no fee to download the MileIQ App or to use the basic account:
MileIQ Account | Cost | Journeys Logged |
Basic | Free | Up to 40 Journeys per Month |
Unlimited | £4.99 per Month or £44.99 Annual | Unlimited Journeys |
The app is available through the Apple App store or Google Play and you can find more information on their website here. It is worth remembering that if you have already claimed capital allowances for your vehicle then you will not be able to use the mileage rate method. Also, if you are using the mileage method then you cannot claim separately for other expenses such as fuel and car repairs. If you have any questions regarding how to efficiently claim back tax on the cost of running your vehicle then please get in contact.
